HumanWare is offering a free Softpak with the purchase of a new Victor Reader Stream. The Softpak was announced earlier this year and includes support for unprotected EPUB, enhanced Audible titles, and MP3 recording among other features. It's a $49 upgrade for existing customers. Deal ends December 31.

Hah, I wondered how long it would take them to do this. Next announcement: the deal is extended indefinitely (most likely scenario). The Softpak strategy didn't make sense to me, at least for new users, because it moved the Stream from the second least expensive book player on the market at $329 USD to the second most expensive ($379 for a fully-featured Stream) behind the Booksense XT. Perhaps it makes sense to charge existing customers, but to put upgrade pricing on every new user never seemed a good business strategy. I would've just made the 3.2 upgrade $49 and included the Softpak among every other new feature; it's not a bad thing to charge for feature upgrades so long as the price is fair and new users don't get the south end of the deal when buying into the product.

So over it. Put the features in the firmware and move on. K THX
