#CSUNATC17, Why the Long Hashtag?

Those of us who have participated in what is now known as the CSUN Assistive Technology Conference are used to typing a few short characters to use the conference's official Twitter hashtag. Last year it was #CSUN16. But conference organizers have made a change which has resulted in a new hashtag format for this year, #CSUNATC17.

The explanation is a simple one and makes sense once you think about it, despite the need to type three extra letters. While CSUN to us is a conference, it really is a university--California State University, Northridge to be exact. The old hashtag identified the university, but not the conference. For example, someone who is graduating from CSUN in 2017 may use the hashtag #CSUN17, a common use for students.

Until last year, the official rarely-used conference title was the International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference, a name that does not lend itself to hashtag shortening. This year, in what seems like a rebranding effort, we have a shorter name and now a sensible hashtag to go with it. Old habits die hard, and you'll likely need to follow both this year to see all of the thousands of tweets that are posted. But as the message filters down, expect #CSUNATC17 to be the new normal going forward.
