Twitter has been making a lot of changes to how the default profile photos work on its website, and this may cause some users to become hidden if they choose not to upload an image.
For background, all Twitter accounts include a place for a profile photo, which is displayed when viewing that user's tweets and profile and in other places. If a profile pic is not uploaded, a placeholder is displayed. Traditionally, this was a randomly-colored egg, but Twitter has now changed this picture to be more inclusive. The new default is a gender-neutral head and shoulders which is also more high contrast for visually impaired users.
Twitter also now allows users to mute accounts without a profile photo. Muted accounts will not show up in timelines or searches, essentially hiding their tweets from users. You can find this under Notification Settings on the Twitter apps or website. Though this feature does not seem to be turned on for existing accounts, it's possible it may become the default for new users or that Twitter may change this setting to default to on in the future.
Thankfully, uploading a photo is a simple process. Profile photos can be of virtually anything, and many people choose pictures other than photos of themselves for uniqueness. Here are the steps to upload a profile photo on Twitter.
Uploading a Twitter Photo
- Visit the Twitter website and log in if you are not already.
- find the Profile and Settings menu near the top of the page, and select View Profile.
- Select the Edit Profile button.
- Select the Change your Profile Photo button.
- Select the Browse button and choose a photo.
- The last screen lets you position and size your photo. This procedure is inaccessible with a screen reader, but you can press Apply to save the changes and your photo.
Twitter also lets you add a header photo, but this is not necessary to avoid the muting problems discussed above.

Of course if it's this easy, the spammers will simply upload photos too. So what does this option gain anyone? What's next? A photocopy of your ID just to prove you're not a robot?
