New Cane and Guide Dog Emojis Coming in 2019, We Asked Aira to Describe what They Look Like

Another set of new emoji is being added for you to use on your mobile devices, including some characters related to blind and visually impaired people.
Unicode version 12.0 adds dozens of new emoji to the pictures you can choose from when sending text messages or chatting on your device ranging from waffles to a sloth. Also included in this round are a variety of new emojis to represent the disability community, including a guide dog and service dog (yes, they make a distinction), and a man and woman holding a cane, oddly referred to as a probing cane.

We enlisted an Aira agent to describe the guide dog and cane emojis in this list. Each emoji includes a version from emoji dictionary Emojipedia, and a sample image which is similar to what may be adopted by Apple or Samsung.

guide dog

The guide dog is a yellow lab, who is standing and pictured with a teal harness along with straps and the customary bar. According to Aira agent James, the dog in the sample emoji looks a bit more alert while the Emojipedia image looks a bit more cartoonish. Both dogs are wearing a teal collar.

Woman with Probing Cane

In the Emojipedia picture, the woman, who appears Caucasian, has medium long brown hair and is wearing a purple short-sleeved shirt and darker purple pants. Her left arm is holding the cane, and she is fashioning a basic pair of black shoes.

The sample image shows a Caucasian woman with longer blond hair, a purple short-sleeved T-shirt, and blue denim pants. She is wearing black shoes with a strip of white, resembling a sneaker. This picture shows the woman holding her cane with her right hand while her left arm is by her side.

Man with Probing Cane

Emojipedia shows us a white male with short brown hair, wearing a red short-sleeved T-shirt, purple or blue pants, and black shoes. Again, the cane is held in the left hand in front of him.

The sample picture of the man shows a white male with short blond hair, a red T-shirt, blue denim pants, and a similar pair of black sneakers to the woman. Also like the woman, the cane is being held with the right hand with his left hand by his side.

Probing Cane

As for the cane itself, it has a ball tip, a red section, and a black handle and wrist strap. The cane will be available as its own emoji along with the female and male described above.

The new emoji should start rolling out this spring to your favorite mobile or desktop device.
