The 25 Most Popular Websites for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Part 1

There are hundreds of websites on the Internet with information, products, news, or other services for the blind and visually impaired. But which are the most popular? We analyzed data from Alexa Internet s online website rankings to present the top 25 most popular websites for the blind and visually impaired. While no single site had a ranking of less than 100,000 (the lower the ranking, the better), nearly two dozen sites are within the top one million most popular websites on the Internet.

Methodology

The Alexa website was surveyed on Saturday, September 26, 2009 for website global ranking data. We looked up dozens of sites and keywords related to blindness in an effort to find all possible candidates. Our list includes only sites who s dominant focus is blind and visually impaired web surfers. Sites with some blindness-related content which also serve other markets, such as Microsoft or Apple, were not included.

All inPlay is primarily enjoyed by North American users, with nearly 98 percent of all traffic originating from the U.S. and Canada.

The appearance of Screenreader.net at number 21 was a bit of a surprise to us, but it demonstrates the reach of Thunder, the free screen reader with a wide international following, especially in Germany and the U.K. This site includes manuals, tutorials, and a user community. Again, the availability of information and downloads in multiple languages probably has helped this site gain popularity as well.
