While we're talking about cheaper alternatives for getting things accomplished, we should point out the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder (model VN 6000) from Amazon.com for $29.99 with free shipping. It doesn't have the frills of the DS series, but if you're looking for a simple note taker which can record several hundred hours of material, this might be it. It has three recording quality modes and stores files in four folders. Although this unit doesn't talk, it is very easily usable by a blind user.
