#csun10: Freedom Scientific Announces the Pearl Portable Reading Solution


Freedom Scientific has announced the Pearl, a portable camera OCR solution that works with version 9 of their OpenBook scanning software. The Pearl camera costs $1,195, and OpenBook 9 is priced at $995. Both products will be available in May. A special introductory price for the Pearl camera is available for $600 until July 15. Previous OpenBook customers can upgrade to OpenBook version 9 for $150. Stay tuned to Blind Bargains for a hands-on look at this device from the CSUN 2010 conference.

My question is, do you have to use the Pearl, with your PC? or is it have open book loaded into it, making it totaly portible.

Uh, a camera that costs more than a computer, coupled with software that costs more than a computer? More proof, if we needed it, that FS has gone around the twist.

@roosterloop: The way it's worded, it sounds as if it works in conjunction with Openbook, not that it has Openbook built in. Not very portable, even with a netbook. Further, I'm sure in typical FS fashion that it will work with Openbook and *only* Openbook, and I'm not paying $999 for that let alone another $1200 for a camera that only works with one product. $1199 for a camera? What is it, an hd camcorder or something?
