Freedom Scientific has released version 9 of its popular OpenBook scanning and OCR software for Windows PCs. In addition to the anticipated support for the new PEARL video camera, the new release also will allow for the camera to act as a video magnifier with zooming capabilities. OpenBook borrows a feature from popular mainstream applications such as OmniPage, enabling the ability to create scanning workflows for common tasks. OpenBook 9 includes RealSpeak™ Solo Direct synthesizers from Nuance® Communications, the same ones available for JAWS and MAGic users. I have chosen to abstain from the purchase of any and all Freedom Scientific products. First, my wallet gives me no choice, because their products are far beyond the price point that is affordable to anyone on a fixed income or who makes less than $50,000 a year. This, however, only applies to me and anyone else who doesn't like to have to take out loans or jump through government hoops just to have access to those things that people who can see take for granted every single day. On the other hand, even if I was a billionaire who could afford to give away Freedom Scientific products to those who want them, the company's unreasonable business practices are inexcusable and force me to refuse to buy their products on moral principle. Kyle - very good points. By the way this portable reading solution that OpenBook interfaces withsounds very much like the EyePal from Abisee that came out a couple of years ago, it sure would be interesting if FS was sued for copyright infringement...
