AT&T has begun to offer a branded version of Code Factory's Mobile Accessibility for its Android users. Available for free exclusively to AT&T customers, Mobile Accessibility Lite is available from the Android market and includes 11 accessible applications including the Code Factory web browser, calendar, Where Am I? GPS app, amongst several others. We've reached out to Code Factory to determine what the Lite in the name refers to. AT&T is the first carrier to offer Mobile Accessibility as a free market download to its customers.

I had a quick try with it to see if I could determine what lite meant. I don't use MA myself, having tried the 30-day trial and not caring for it. As best I can tell, the Lite in the name seems to indicate that it doesn't contain the screen reader or input method components, i.e. it is the suite of self-contained apps and nothing more. You would still need to use Talkback or Spiel to access anything outside of the MA environment.

On its prepaid voice service, AT&T offers a $30 Android phone. I wonder if Mobile Accessibility Lite would offer independent access to the functions and features needed for voice calling with the prepaid service. Would someone need to install Talk Back or Spiel in addition to Mobile Accessibility Lite? If access is now available at no additional charge for the prepaid service on the inexpensive android phones, it will dramatically lower the cost of accessible cell phone service for blind people in the United States. With AT&T prepaid service, airtime is 10 cents a minute. A $100 purchase of 1,000 minutes lasts a year and unused minutes roll over to the next year when more minutes are bought. Quite a blind bargain indeed.
