Want to help make flow charts accessible? The Knowledge Discovery Lab in the Department
of Computer Science at North Carolina State
University is conducting a survey on flow chart accessibility. They are currently building
and testing prototypes of a system that can
take in an image of a diagram such as a flow chart, parse the image, recognize the
shapes and text, and then present this flow chart
to blind and low vision users via a touchscreen interface on an Android tablet or
iPad. The system will support various forms of
navigation such as an adventure style node to node based method, a summary mode where
the computer reads out the diagram, and touch
based exploration in which the user can navigate the flow chart similar to how one
navigates around using the VoiceOver screen
reader on iOS devices.
To this end, they need your help! Please fill out this survey, pass it along to all
your friends on Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter,
LinkedIn, and on email lists. Surveys like this are crucial to help make the system
relevant to real users with real world problems
instead of simply addressing an academic novelty.
