First it was Recording for the Blind. Then in 1995, the name was changed to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic to reflect the serving of additional communities. But now, the mention of any sort of disability has been removed, and the nonprofit is simply known as Learning Ally. "Our members have expressed loud and clear
that they don’t wish to be labeled or typecast with a specific ‘disability.’ They
just want the same opportunities to succeed that others enjoy. Our new name goes
to the heart of supporting their desire to learn and achieve," commented President and CEO Andrew Friedman. The name was selected after months of research and focus groups, and is accompanied by anew website at learningally.org. Learning Ally serves over 300,000 individuals with learning differences and reading disabilities. Fun fact: The original incorporated name for Learning Ally was National Committee for Recording for the Blind.
