Ask the Readers: Your Favorite iPhone Accessories

With the iPhone undoubtedly now the most popular phone for the blind and visually impaired, a lot of users have found some rather cool and useful accessories. Like most devices, everything from fancy cases and keyboards to batteries and chargers is available but unfortunately, these items vary widely in quality as well. So we'd like to know what your favorite iPhone or iPod accessories are. If you know a brand or exact item name, that would be helpful in order to help other users find them as well. Sound off in the comments.

I have a simple Belkin hard plastic shell for my iPod Touch that i like. When I bought the Touch, I bought a silicon shell. It didn't have much going for it other than non-slip on a surface. It didn't stay on, especially in a pocket. I like Koss Porta-Pro headphones asa replacement for the ear buds. They are cheap, light, sound good, and have a life-time warranty.

With my i-phone 4 I use a moovie juice pack, which acts as a good case and also contains a battery that increases the time between charges by about 70 percent. It uses the juice pack's battery first, then reverts to the phone battery itself. Also I have a sonie blue tooth head set that pairs up with the phone very well and makes for good listening. I sure love the i-phone but not a.t.n.t so hopefully will be able to take it to t-mobile before long. Thanks, Bill Jordan

There is now a new, and very cool GPS available for the iDevices. It is the Dual Electronics XGPS150. It can be used with the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The manufactuer is at: http://xgps150.dualav.com/ and a thorough review is at: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/dual-electronics-xgps150-universal-gps-receiver/ Unlike the GPS in the iPhone which updates every ten seconds, the XGPS150 updates every second. It's used by iPad and iPod users who have no GPS, but also by iPhone users who need longer battery life and more accuracy. It also is more accurate simply because you can easily put it on your dashboard, on your arm with included band, or plop it in a splash-proof holder (included) for boating. Because of this, you can give it a good view of the sky. It charges via USB. It also comes with an extra long strap for attaching it to your backpack. It's very tiny, fast and switches itself off automatically when it isn't paired. There's no need to jailbreak an iDevice; simply pair it and fire up your app. I've used mine for three weeks now, and it works just as advertised. Its armband is very secure and I've worn it for hours in the hot sun successfully, while keeping my more fragile iPod Touch safely in my pocket. If you don't have regular network connectivity, you need to use it with apps that feature offline maps like Tom-Tom, Navigon or RoadMate. Even if you have an iPhone with a built-in GPS, you'll find that Bluetooth uses less battery than running the GPS in the background, and the added accuracy of this external GPS will help you find specific locations as a pedestrian.

I like the Apple wireless keyboard. It is made with aluminum. Just like all the new Macs. It is durable, confortable and it works perfectly with my iPod touch 3G and VoiceOver. One thing though. You must have at least a base knowledged on how to use voiceover on the Mac. Since most of the commands are the same. But other than that, great device.

I was tired of the headphones that came with the iPhone breaking and sounding like a tin can. I soon found I liked bowse headphones but the wires are pretty thin but still a good headphone. My top favorite however is JBuds by Jlab audio. These cans are completely durable with kevlar coated wiring it's built to last. Hand molded alluminum casing for the actual headphones. They're completely cealed so nothing can get into the sound chamber and it comes with 8 pairs of different tips from flanged to jointed to the regular straight tips. You can also buy earclips to help them stay in your ears if that's a problem. Sound quality is amazing I'd say just as good as the bowse good at noise canceling. They have excellent bass and high and mid range sounds. They come in a rugged built case made of heavy rubber. I hope this helps. bowse I would rate 7 out of 10 for durablility, and 9 out of 10 for sound. Jbuds 10 out of 10 for build and 9.5 for sound.
